I’ve damaged/cut the cable of my mower/vacuum cleaner/hedge trimmer, can you repair this?

Category: Repairs

This is usually fixable, but the approach depends a lot on where the damage in the cable is. You might need to purchase some additional parts so that we can make a safe repair. If you aren’t comfortable deciding the course of action, please bring the appliance in and we will be happy to help formulate a plan. If needed, parts might be able to be purchased locally in Wokingham on the day or a second visit might be necessary, after you have sourced them.

1. Damage near the plug end of the cable:

Most appliances have a factory fitted moulded-on plug so we would remove the cut/damaged piece of cable complete with plug and attach a new plug. In this situation, please bring along a new plug. For outdoor appliances it is recommended to use a high impact rubber plug. You will lose some cable length.

2. Damage near the appliance:

We would open the appliance, disconnect and remove the cut/damaged piece of cable. We would then re-attach the cable to the appliance. Again, you will lose some cable length. No additional parts are required in this case.

3. Damage in the middle of the cable (or your situation is case 1 or 2 but you don’t want to lose any cable length):

We could fit a suitable cable joiner but you would end up with a lump in the middle of the cable and some people find this too awkward.

Or we could replace the entire cable (which could be longer than the original if that is desirable). In this case please bring along a new cable and suitable indoor or outdoor plug as appropriate.
